WordleX

Danish Wordle with points – and a word list that the players themselves help decide.

The front page of wordlex.dk with the two games, WordleX 5 and WordleX 6

Two versions

WordleX is a game with Danish words, and the site is in Danish. It comes in two versions: WordleX 5, where you have to guess a 5-letter word in at most 6 tries, and WordleX 6 with 6 letters and 7 tries. The rules are the familiar ones:

  • A Green: the letter is in the word and in the right place.
  • B Yellow: the letter is in the word, but in a different place.
  • C Grey: the letter is not in the word.

Points instead of just won or lost

You get points for every new green and yellow tile – the earlier in the game, the more. A yellow is worth half as much as a green, and if a yellow later turns green, you get the difference. If you guess the word on the first try, you get 1,000 points. That goes for both versions, so you can see how much harder 6 letters are.

You keep your points even if you don't guess the word. With an account, your points are added to the leaderboard, and you can make the Top-100.

Hints that cost

In the first row you can get a suggested starting word for free. If you get stuck later, you can buy a list of the words that are still possible. The price goes up the fewer words are left, but drops with each row, just like the points do – and in the last two rows there is an insurance.

A word list run by the players

Which words are in WordleX is decided by the players together in the dictionary. Each word has one of three statuses:

  • Common – can be a solution word.
  • Rare – accepted as a guess, but never a solution word.
  • Deleted – not accepted as a guess.

If you have an account, you can change a word's status or suggest new words – but you always have to say why. All changes are saved, so everyone can see who changed what and why, and change it again. Words that players have tried to guess several times, but which are not in the word list, are shown as suggestions, and each word links to Den Danske Ordbog.

Behind the scenes

WordleX is written in PHP, MySQL and plain JavaScript – no frameworks. The games each live on their own subdomain, w5.wordlex.dk and w6.wordlex.dk, but share login, users and dictionary with wordlex.dk.

The source code is on GitHub: github.com/lianergoist/wordlex.dk.
